Thinking of getting a HD telle but unsure weather i should be looking for a 1080i or 1080p which is the best.

I have an Xbox 360 connected to my 32 inch Philips HDTV via an HDMI cable and for some reason there is only an HD 1080i option and not HD 1080p for the display type, how can I make it HD 1080p on my Xbox 360? It won’t let me.
